This medicine has been prescribed for you. Do not pass it on to others. It may harm them, even if their symptoms are the same as yours.
How to Take
  • Take clopidogrel exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
  • If you miss a dose of clopidogrel, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
  • You can take clopidogrel with or without food.
Dosage and Administration
Usual adult dose
Oral, 75 mg (base) once a day

Usual pediatric dose
Safety and efficacy have not been established.

Usual geriatric dose

Warnings & Precautions

Before using 
Before taking clopidogrel, tell your doctor or pharmacist:
  • If you are allergic to clopidogrel
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • Dental: Risk of increased blood loss during dental procedures
  • Surgical: Risk of increased blood loss during surgical procedures
  • If you are taking other medication, especially
Aspirin
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Fluvastatin
phenytoin
Tamoxifen
Tolbutamide
Torsemide
warfarin
Heparin
  • Other medical problems, especially:
Bleeding, active, such as:
Intracranial hemorrhage
Peptic ulcer
Any condition in which there is a significant risk of bleeding, such as:
Surgery
Trauma
Hepatic function impairment

Warnings
  • Laboratory value alterations:
With physiology/laboratory test values
Bilirubin, serum concentrations and hepatic enzymes, serum values (may be increased)
Cholesterol, total (serum concentrations may be increased)
Neutrophil count and platelet count (may be decreased)
Non protein nitrogen (NPN) (serum concentrations may be increased)
Uric acid (serum concentrations may be increased)
  • Risk-benefit should be considered when the following medical problems exist:
Bleeding, active, such as: Peptic ulcer
Hepatic function impairment
Plan to have surgery or a dental procedure
  • Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use. Your doctor may instruct you to stop clopidogrel for 5 to 7 days before surgery. Do not stop taking clopidogrel without talking with your heart doctor (cardiologist) first. 
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
  • FDA pregnancy category B. If you think you may be pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using clopidogrel while you are pregnant. 
  • It is not known if this medicine is found in breast milk.
Side/Adverse Effects

  • Those indicating need for medical attention
Incidence more frequent (≥ 5%)

  • Chest pain
  • Pain, generalized
  • Purpura (red or purple spots on skin, varying in size from pinpoint to large bruises)
  • Upper respiratory infection

Incidence less frequent (1 to < 5%)

  • Atrial fibrillation; or palpitations
  • Bronchitis
  • Edema
  • Dyspnea
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
  • Gout (joint pain)
  • Hypertension
  • Syncope
  • Urinary tract infection

Incidence rare (< 1%): Intracranial hemorrhage
Incidence 0.7%: Skin reactions, severe; thrombocytopenia
Incidence 0.4%: neutropenia, including agranulocytosis, peptic, gastric, or duodenal ulcer

  • Those indicating need for medical attention only if they continue or are bothersome:
Incidence more frequent (≥ 5 %)
  • Abdominal or stomach pain
  • Arthralgia (joint pain)
  • Back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Dyspepsia
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache

Incidence less frequent (< 5%)
  • Anxiety
  • Asthenia (weakness)
  • Constipation
  • Cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Rhinitis
  • Skin rash
Storage
  • Store this medication below 30˚C, preferably between 15 and 30.
  • Store this medication in a well-closed container.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
